    Djibouti Capital of Djibouti

  • Djibouti City is the capital of Djibouti, in the Horn of Africa. It’s known for its 19th-century architecture and the port at the entrance to the Red Sea. In the European Quarter, Place Menelik has whitewashed French colonial buildings and Moorish arcades lined with cafes and shops. In the African Quarter, the central market sells fruit, vegetables and spices. The early-20th-century Hamoudi Mosque is nearby.
  • A causeway leads to L'Escale Marina, linked by a waterfront promenade to the Moorish-style Palais du Peuple. West of the city, in the volcanic landsdjibouti of the Danakil Desert, Lake Assal is a highly saline crater lake surrounded by lava fields. In the nearby Goda Mountains, the Day Forest National Park protects ancient juniper woodland. Straddling the border with Djibouti, the area around Lake Abbe is known for its limestone chimney formations. Offshore, the Gulf of Tadjoura and Bab al-Mandab Strait have coral reef dive sites, including the Seven Brothers Islands, visited by migrating whale sharks.

  • When to visit Djibouti City

  • Djibouti City has a hot, dry climate. Temperatures can be very high May–Sep, particularly Jun–Aug, when winds blow hot air in from the desert. Temperatures are more moderate Oct–Apr. Whale sharks typically migrate through the region Nov–Feb. Independence Day (Jun 27) celebrates the country's liberation from France and features a military parade, marching bands and presidential address.

  • When to visit Lake Assal

  • Lake Assal in winter (Oct–Apr) is hot but cooled by occasional light rain. In the hot season (May–Sep), temperatures soar further and the low-lying lake can be among the hottest places on earth. The sense of heat is increased by hot winds like the Sabo from southwest and the dusty Khamsin from northwest.

  • Tadjoura

  • Tadjoura is a city in Djibouti, a country in the Horn of Africa. It’s known for its whitewashed houses and many mosques. Nearby is quiet Les Sables Blancs Beach. West of the city, Day Forest National Park is home to juniper forests and birdlife, including the rare Djibouti francolin. Ferries cross the Gulf of Tadjoura to the capital, Djibouti City, where there are landmarks like the colonial Presidential Palace.

  • Tadjoura has a desert climate with minimal rainfall year-round. May–Sep can be extremely hot. Temperatures are slightly lower but still warm Oct–Apr. Day Forest National Park has cooler weather due to its elevation.
